Private-use TV/radio licence, exemption

    The private-use broadcasting licence is charge per domicile and is irrespective of the type and number of broadcasting appliances. The rule is: one household, one fee.
    The broadcasting licence includes all

    - broadcasting appliances,

    - smartphones and

    - computers

    within your home and in the private cars of all of the residents in your home. When one person in your domicile pays the licence fee, the obligation to pay is covered for all persons living in your domicile.

    Are you a student living in a student residence? Here it depends on the exact spacial conditions. You must pay the licence fee if your room is accessible directly through its own door from

    - the stairwell or

    - an entrance hall or

    - from outside.

    You do not have to pay the licence fee if your room can only be accessed via another apartment.

    Persons with disabilities and recipients of state social benefits are entitled to reductions.
    Special regulations apply to companies, institutions and the self-employed.

    Requirements

    You must apply to the subscription service

    - if you are 18 years old or over and

    - if neither you nor any other person already pays the broadcasting licence fee.

    The is no obligation to pay the licence fee for accommodation that is not inhabited. The prerequisites are that

    - no-one lives there

    - no rental agreement exists for the accommodation, and

    - that no-one is registered at the registration office as living there.

     

    Fees

    For citizens:

     

    - per domicile: €17.50 per month

    - every further domicile €17.50 per month

    - reduced broadcasting licence fee (one third of the licence fee): €5.83

     

    The licence fee must be paid on a quarterly basis. The subscription service collects the fee in the middle of the quarterly period.

    On 01.01.2013, the “Rundfunkbeitrag” (Broadcasting contribution) replaced the “Rundfunkgebühr” (Broadcasting fee).

    Processing time

    The obligation to pay the fee begins on the first of the month in which you first reside in a domicile, i.e. that you

    - live there,

    - are registered as living there or

    - are named in the rental agreement as being the tenant.
